original painting
acrylic, pencil and pastel on stretched canvas
76 x 102 cm
once a week for an hour or so
they gather together
to mull over the oddities of flight
and a host of other things
the ephemeral nature of air
the dynamics of perching in wet weather
the unruly fluff puff of down
and for what purpose
feathers
in all their infinite variety
are formed just so
they poke and ponder
survey and solicit
wandering from plumage to perch to preening
from who to what to how
and then one in passing
innocently asks,
have you ever noticed how
under quiet starlight
feathers seem to shine
with an unearthly glow?
and they still
for just a moment
in awe
of what they might be
of who they might become
