original painting
acrylic, pencil and pastel on stretched canvas
61 x 91 cm
she leans in
very close
at least once every day
she turns it both ways -
upside and down
at least once every way
she's learnt that light leaks at sunrise
that dust dances mostly unseen
that wisdom whispers then gusts
unearthing what's been
she's learnt happenings want hearing
that hands want to mould
that ask begets tell
that told softens hold
she's learnt that history repeats
that tea leaves don't know
that little by little
giants will grow
she's learnt a heart doesn't bounce
that prickles need pulling
that people go dot to dot
they're seasons and singing
she's learnt that sometimes
they're out of lines-out of mind-out of place
then sometimes they're on time, in tune, just the right face
she's learnt that stars will shoot
rust will eat
and this too shall pass
she's learnt that near ones
beloved ones
are worth holding fast
