original painting
acrylic, pencil and pastel on stretched canvas
76 x 102 cm
amid the forest
beneath boughs and branches
between frond and fern
there is a place that mermaids go
they shake salt
and polish scales
and unknot knotted locks
swapping the bright and the up down heave and tumble
for another world
they long for the trees
for the lilt of ground sounds
for leaf light dapple
for the land
but when all the salt is shook
and all the scales polished
and all the locks unknotted
they remember they are fit for the briny blue
and so they look past the grove and canopied sky
for froth and foam
they long for the deep
for shell and shine
for a gull's call and the tide's turn
for the sea
