original painting
acrylic, pencil and pastel on stretched canvas
76 x 102 cm
midway between before and what's next
between the planning and practising
he winds time
and after all the wrestle and want of day
he calls pause.
for a dawn without dusk
and a mind without rest
and a footfall whose pace knows no slow
comes to know stumble
and so he pulls the sun from the sky
he declares done on the day
and signals a hush and a hold
he mouths, be still.
for an outward without a within
and miles run without measure
and a breath that knows no quiet in...out...in...out...
comes to know shortness
and so in a steady stride across the heavens
a lesser light watches and clocks
while he who knows the moon
gentles and cajoles and caresses to dreaming
he whispers, rest little one.
for a slumber untangles the tight
and a spell undoes the fizz frizz of all that waking
and a lid that winks heavy then shut
comes begging to open again
