There’s a loose transient, washed, windy feeling to the piece - like it’s still settling.
My sense is that it mirrors the way in which we often signal our feelings and wants and thoughts - in a blown-in, in process, still figuring it out, unresolved kind of a way.
It’s the careful and the careless, the thought-filled and the thoughtless, the planned and unprompted, unfinished and impactful, the filled with air and the weighty - it’s the culmination of the things we do for each other and to each other, that bind us or push us apart.
It’s those things given freely or delicately held back, the words and feelings flung out and found, the things that wound and scab and heal and scar - those gestures caught in moments become lifetimes, become forevers.
My painting Gesture holds within it four different happenings - safe keeping, way making, suspended, reaching moments of intention and attention, times of transference and encouragement, moments of reflection and becoming. They say I hear you, I see you, I know you, and where you are, I will be also.
