Moths and Moths

once
when the ink ran dry
they turned to penning letters in moth
exchanging envelopes one for one 
carefully dusting the insides 
with the velvet confetti of soft things

every other day 
deliveries arrive
pushed into letter boxes and dropped on doormats

in the pause before the open
they listen for the scritch scratch of waiting wings 
the too-excited-to-stay-inside-their-packet sort
the sort that tells of missing and wanting and waiting
 
in the opening after the pause 
they watch with upturned mouths and crinkled eyes
for the wordless whirligig 
for the sayings that spin into the air 
for the up-down dance that tells 
of each day's rising and rememberings and roundabouts 

and as moths exit through open windows 
they hold close 
those envelopes of the softest velvet confetti
looking for nibbled holes 
for leftover messages 
cut by moths into pressed paper
that say 
even when we are apart
I think of you
